Ultradian , Circadian and Infradian rhythm
I recently read about chronobiology, not rocket science don’t worry.
I want to talk about it because it is strictly connected to learning.
Chronobiology, as the word says, is about time and life. More specifically about life cycles and repetition of rhythms in our lives.
To give you an example, Ultradian rhythm (I like the spelling of this word r-h-y-t-h-m rhythm), is a cycle that repeats within 24hours – think of the heartbeat or appetite. Circadian (Circa Diem in Latin) repeats one cycle daily – think of sleep patterns. Infradian has longer than a day rhythm – think of menstrual cycle.

Now where is the connection to learning a language, you may ask.
Well, this fact that we are bound to obey certain patterns or cycles is what makes us more or less willing to engage in activities. Some people identify as a morning person, some others are better only after they’ve had their third coffee and others are night birds and work better after the sun goes down. It is a fact.
This difference has to be taken into consideration, it’s applied biology!
Do I have the data to back up my theory? Not really but you have, I mean, I am sure you can relate to this. I am also sure the Infradian rhythm too, the longer than one day cycle, has to be taken into consideration. Actually, I am confident it is what can mainly affect our learning journey. I always perceive my energy as waves, some days I surf them, some others it’s flat…not even a weak stream or current, just flat.

So, what is it that I am trying to say?
Just know your patterns, your cycles, your r-h-y-t-h-m-s rhythms, get familiar with your ups and downs, check the tide and surf when you feel like it. Read, watch series, record voice memos, write your thoughts down on a diary.
This doesn’t mean you can to do nothing when the waves are not there.
That is when you show your commitment, when you paddle, I mean when you get down to studying and practicing even though It’s not the best time cause, as ACDC said ”it’s a long way to the top” and keep moving is the only way forward.
